I updated to the new 3.1.2 OS for my Ipod touch when it first popped up on itunes. At first I thought cool...until i tried using my wifi connection.

Now no mater what I do it wont connect to any wifi, not my home network, not wifi hotspots. nothing. it sees the routers and tries to connect , including asking for the password to my home net only to get, unable to join the network "--------".  Before this update I could connect with no issues. I have tried all sugestions offered by users at the Apple support forums. Including resetting the net settings ,restarting the phone, doing a full restore, downloading 3.1.2 again and reinstalling, to no avail.

So I called Apple to see if I could get some help. But since my Ipod is 158 days out of warranty I got sorry we can offer you links to our user support forums but no actual support unless you pay. I was livid, I bought this update that killed my WIFI and now I have to pay them to fix it??? I asked if there was a way to revert to the last version of the OS but was told they dont support doing that and offered no help.

Not to mention since this upate the wifi seems to have gotten weaker, by the essence that I can find my home wifi in any room of my house with my laptop, and used to be able to with my Ipod as well. But since the update I can be standing next to the router and my ipod only sees it some of the time or not at all. I also went in to my router to see if at least the ipod was being seen by my router, it isnt..it's as if the update turned off the ipods ability to be detected. As well as weakened the distance the ipod recieves wifi signal.

I have always been very satisfied with my Apple purchases up until this point.. But when I purchase an update that screws up a perfectly working item, and am told sorry ur SOL unless you pay us to fix it, it tends to leave me a bit less than appeased. Almost seems like extortion..

Interestingly enough I see folks getting all mad at SD support when they take a few days to get their issue resolved. whoopie deal.. In 10 or so years they have never left me feeling screwed.. SD support rocks compared to most out there.

I won't buy another Apple product.  I lost any respect I would have had for them when I found out until they were sued there was no such thing as a replacement battery for the iPod.  Of course, now to get a replacement battery from Apple themselves, it cost almost as much as a new iPod, but at least they are available from other sources and can be purchased and replaced for a reasonable amount of money.  When my iPod totally breaks, I'm going to buy just a non-name brand mp3 player, because $300 is really too much to be paying for the modern version of a "record player" IMO.

Oh...and I got rid of iTunes, too.  I use Winamp, instead.  A lot less bloat and complication that way.

Hey karen thanks for the input.    if still having battery issues you might try something like this. You can use it to run your ipod not to mention it cuts down on the internal batterys usage thus extending the over all life..  http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&q=Ipod+external+battery&cid=11693597211472491437&sa=title#p

That's COOL!  Too bad it's just for the mini.  I have one of the 5th generation iPods.  I found a replacement battery for $25 online and had my husband replace it for me.  In my search for a new battery, I found this story, about how things were before Apple was sued.  http://www.ipodsdirtysecret.com/message.html

interesting read... they make external batteries for all the ipod gen's, this one works with larger ipods like the 5th gen Iphone etc.. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&q=Ipod+external+battery&cid=11635201241795585072#p

I'm definitely going to have to get one of these!  I've bookmarked it for when I'm in a position to buy.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

You've described the problem...did you happen to get a fix for the broken wifi after the update??

thanks

Two days ago I ignorantly updated my ITouch to OS 3.1 and my WIFI quit working.  Apple refused to provide tech support even though I had updated the OS (not application) on a computer device that day.

I've tried all the fixes like leaving the network, resetting newtork settings, and doing a full restore of factory settings and restore a backup.  I've updated the firmware on my router.  My itouch doesn't even detect or join the network most of the time.

Extortion is the word to describe it.  The tech support Apple that will provide cost $30 (600% the price of the OS I bought).  They claim the device is out of warranty although I bought the OS 2 days ago.

I asked multiple Apple support techs if I paid $30 could they assure me they could get it working and ALL of them said NO.  After all the troubleshooting I've done WHAT IS APPLE GOING TO DO OTHER THAN TELL ME IT IS AN ISSUE WITH MY ROUTER.

Has anyone paid for the Apple Support and did it fix the problem?

All I can say is if Apple doesn't acknowledge or fix the problem very soon they have definately lost a customer.

I'm running 3.1.2 on my first generation iPod touch without wifi issues.

on Dec 30, 2009

I think it may be if you are trying to connect to a router without security or is an older router that is using WEP not WPA.

It only happens in certain routers.

no the recent update still did not fix the WIFI issue.

Nope it happens on all routers as i have tried free hotspots that it used to connect to. as well as wifi @ of family and friends, my router is brand new Fio's router. it worked before update then. nothing. Interestingly enough my new 3G Ipod touch I got for christmas works prefectly with my router.

I'm running 3.1.2 on my first generation iPod touch without wifi issues.

It dont seem to be an issue for every Ipod touch first gen, some work and some dont after the 3.1.2 update. It just sux Apple fubars your $200+ Ipod touch investment then tells you tour S.O.L. unless you pay them to fix it. Almost seems like they intentionally disable the WIFi Till you cough up $$ for repairs that werent needed before thier OS update.

Sounds like something that could turn into a class action suit.  Anybody have any relatives who are lawyers who might like to stick it to Apple?

Does it work properly if you downgrade?

on Jan 03, 2010

I downgraded using this website and my wifi worked immediately.

**UPDATE**

2 days ago my son tried one last time with safari ( I gave him the Ipod 1st gen after getting a new 3G) and it is working... I'm not sure why or how but all of a sudden it just started being seen by the router and is accesing wifi again. Almost as if the wifi was reenabled on it.

on Jan 03, 2010

Maybe it was the pizza between wifi and the iPod preventing access. Your son has the magic touch.
