tho i am no master at litestep. "theres to many builds to keep up with", i will answer any questions i can.

First before you install litestep remember to read all the documentation you can. litestep.com is a good start. Second if u install litestep and then want to remove litestep, set the shell back to explorer FIRST....then uninstall litestep...if you dont set explorer back as the shell before uninstall litestep u will have NO visible desktop on restart....in the litestep folder look for a "set shell to explorer" icon use this to set shell back to the windows default desktop. then reboot and uninstall litestep....

here is where u can get more documentation as well as the latest build. http://beyondconvention.net/ohussain/lsinstaller/index.htm i recommend useing the latest build as they are the most stable..

Nope, you're up to date.
Glad to her PixOffice fired up correctly for you.
The key is to look for OTS2 compatible themes.
Older themes can work but require tweaking of the step.rc file.

Well, I just downloaded NonDisjunction from the Litestep section at this site. When I tried to install it, I got the error messages too.

The reason for the error message is: the theme is not OTS2 compliant. There are perhaps ways to get it to run, Moshi obviously got it up n running, but generally non-OTS2 themes will not run "out of the box" with the newest Litestep distros.

You are best to stick with OTS2 compliant themes for now until you get the knack of modifying themes. After that you can tackle modifying earlier themes to run on OTS2 setups.

hmmm, i have to add that i unzipped the theme manually, then refreshed the theme list and then selected the theme.

would be cool if somebody would have posted what the error messages say.

two possibilities:

- structure of the ZIP file does not allow auto-installing
- a module requires a library that isn´t on your system (gdi+, msvcr70, whatever)

but hey ... without the error messages ...
reminds me of the "i can´t use my shoes" thread: https://www.wincustomize.com/msgboard.asp?BID=WC&id=247865

#36...., moshi.

Yes, again it's hard to instruct someone via MB about the intricacies of LS, particularly when modding an 'original' theme to suit OTS1 and/or 2.

It's imperative that a newbie learn to walk before he can run.

Start by spending a few days [at least] familiarising yourself with the defaults....and any other themes that you DO get to run OK.

Eventually you will come to understand what it is that causes one theme to work well and not another....at that point you'll be able to get them working yourself.

But holding hands while the kid runs around his new neighborhood will just leave the 'parents' with bloody sore arms....

Hi, I just got Lite Step like a few days ago and its sweeet!
My question is that I have downloaded one skin and it works fine everything loads automatically, I try and download some other themes and all I get are files. However, some of them( all of them) don't say how to install them and everytime I put the folder in the Program Files>Lite Spte>Themes and then I try to load the skin I get all theses pop up saying that it can't load all these files such as like .dlls and such. I was wondering if theres anyway to intall them manually or automatically. It gets really annoying cause I only have the default one and another one but all the other ones don't work!!
If anyone can help me out I'll really love em for it.
Thanks, in advance

well, with older themes start by unzipping them.

Then place the entire (unzipped) theme folder into your Themes Directory. The themes directory is usually in: Litestep\profiles\your-name\themes\.

With your right-click popup go to "Litestep>change themes>refresh list".
Click on that. After that, the theme you just installed should show up in your themes list.

To run that theme, select it from the themes list and cross your fingers that it loads. (older themes sometimes run, sometimes don't). If not, you always have the "revert to default theme?" option.

looks like your problem has to do with the sapces in paths.

have a look at step.rc. you are likely to find lines like this:
LoadModule $ModulesDir$desktop2.dll

change this to:
LoadModule "$ModulesDir$desktop2.dll"

the quotes make the difference. do this with all path definitions (usually everything you need to change is at the beginning of step.rc.

Nope, I tried both of what you guys said and still non of the ones I dl didn't work. Hmm.....
Found no LoadModule $ModulesDir$desktop2.dll or anything like that and still nothing came back but a blank shell. Im going to go dl some and see what I can do.

hi, I have a question, and would be really greatful if anybody could answer it.
I'm currently using the PixOffice theme in litestep and its great. Looks very nice, runs well, no problems, except a tiny matter. I don't know how to create shortcuts on the desktop. I use BT broadband, and would like to put a shortcut to that on my desktop, as well as some of my games and there isn't a shortcut to my computer , my documents and the recycle bin. could anybody let me know how to create these shortcuts on the desktop please? Thank you very much for any help you can provide.

Mike!

oops.. sorry for the double post.. no idea how that happened!
on Feb 21, 2004
I think don't you right click on the file game etc. and then one of the options on the windows popup says creat a shortcut. (done by clicking on a file folder)If you are talking about making a shortcut from Lite Step um you just right click on the item from the poup and then on the windows popup at the very bottom theres a Creat a Shortcut link. Click that and it should creat a shortcut. For some skins it won't let you see it on the desktop but for some of them you can. I would recommend you get NetStart and for one of the options it tell you what you currently have on your desktop,
Hopes that helps

Thanks moshi and Phar0e,

I got it to work. I just reinstalled Lite Step and then I realized for some skins the desktop is just blank and all there is is a right click popups and then you can get the menus from there.
Thanks guys.
